Trans Rights Indicator Project (TRIP) 

TRIP provides insight into the legal situation transgender people faced in 174 countries from 2000 to 2021. The dataset currently includes 14 indicators concerning criminalization, legal gender recognition, and anti-discrimination protections.  Available for download here.

Criminalization (National or Subnational) 


Direct Criminalization:

Do laws criminalize transgender people on the basis of gender identity or expression?


Indirect Criminalization:

Are transgender people indirectly criminalized through laws and offenses that do not specifically pertain to gender identity or expression? 


Legal Gender Recognition (National)

Gender Marker Change:

Do national laws/policies allow individuals to change gender markers on legal identity documents?

Prohibitive Requirements:

Are there any prohibitive requirements for changing gender markers on legal documents?

Nonbinary/Third Gender Recognition

Are nonbinary or third gender options available for legal gender marker change? This includes any option that is available beyond the traditionally designated binary options of “male” or “female.”


Anti-Discrimination Protections (National) 

General Anti-Discrimination Protections:

Are there any general (non-sector specific) national anti-discrimination laws that explicitly protect gender identity, gender expression, and/or "gender reassignment"?

Constitutional Anti-Discrimination Protections:

Does the constitution explicitly protect an individual on the basis of gender identity, gender expression, and/or "gender reassignment"?

Employment Anti-Discrimination Protections:
